Enough exercise, a balanced diet, and time outdoors — all of these things make you and your family healthier and happier, but there’s one important thing missing: a clean home. There are many reasons for this. For one, your dwelling could be crammed with toxins and bacteria if it’s been a while since you attacked them with a broom, mop, and duster. There’s also the shear stress that’s caused by living in a disorganized environment, which can actually keep you awake at night and weaken your immune system, leading to illness. There’s nothing for it but to roll up your sleeves and get to work. If you’re in need of motivation, here’s why you should.

Obviously, regularly cleaning your home will keep crumbs, dust, pet dander, and other messes to a minimum, resulting in a consistently healthier environment. But the thought of bringing out your heavy vacuum once a week can be daunting. Instead, opt for a cordless vacuum that can quickly pick up messes. Using it daily should be a breeze because it’s easier and safer to handle than a corded vacuum, and it’s almost as powerful as its larger counterpart.

 You’ll Get Rid of Mold
That nasty stuff that seems to grow in those moist areas of your home? It is growing because it’s alive. A fungus similar to mushrooms, mold can trigger a number of unpleasant health conditions such as allergies and asthma. Cleaning solutions with bleach, ammonia or baking soda work wonders in killing the infestation, but keep your home dry with a dehumidifier in the future. That way, you’ll be less at risk of falling ill.

You’ll Eliminate Germs
Germs are another major cause of illnesses that you want to get rid of as soon as possible. There are some nasty ones lurking in your kitchen and bathroom, not to mention on all the handles and doorknobs, and they include salmonella and E. coli. You’ve probably heard of outbreaks related to those two bugs, so use a disinfectant to bid them farewell.

Besides clearing your home of mold and germs, you’ll also sweep away plenty of crumbs and other particles of food that attract unwanted guests, such as cockroaches and rats. You don’t want them showing up in your basement — or anywhere else — as pest removal can be rather expensive, costing you hundreds of dollars for one visit from the exterminator.

Yes, a messy home can be a hazardous one. Those old newspapers laying around could easily catch fire with just one spark, or someone could trip over one of the many toys lying on the floor. You’d better put everything away where it belongs before someone ends up in the hospital. After all, you don’t want that hanging over your head.

Any physical activity burns off calories, and cleaning is no exception. There are even ways to turn it into a proper workout by putting just a little more effort into your movements. Fitness coach Malia Frey recommends lunging forward while you vacuum and mop or standing on your toes while dusting. That’ll tone your calf muscles as well.

You’ll Enjoy Your Home More
This is what it’s all about at the end of the day. After all, your home is supposed to be a sanctuary of peace where you can unwind after a hard day’s work, and that’s not possible if it’s a mess. Once you’re done with the cleaning, you can bask in the fresh scent with a book and enjoy the satisfaction of a job well done.
